We've added a relatively small update to the sites today that revolves around the "Required files" system in the file database. When an author adds their file to the site via our file wizard one of the steps involves adding any files that the author's file needs in order to work. This information is then displayed in the rather small, out-of-the-way button labeled "Required" on the file page. Typically authors also put any file requirements in their descriptions but, as I'm sure any file author would be willing to confirm, some users seem incapable of actually reading descriptions, installation instructions or indeed anything pertinent to do with the file before they add the file to their game. Guess what some of these users then do when they can't get the file to work or it breaks their game? That's right, they head off to the file's comments to give the author a piece of their mind or ask for help when all the information they need is right there, on the file page! It's annoying.

We've made two changes to help better inform downloaders about the file's requirements, and also to inform the mod author as to whether you've actually downloaded those requirements when you comment on their file page.

As an author, if you've specified requirements for your file you will then be able to tick a checkbox when uploading your files that will turn on a notification window for anyone who downloads that file. The notification window will inform the user that your file requires other files in order to work, it'll list those files, and then require the downloader to click a button in order to get to the fileserver list or download your file via NMM.

Please note that we've made this an opt-out feature, rather than opt-in. That means if you've specified required files on your files then this notification window will be turned on as default on all your uploads for that file. If you want to turn off this notification window you need to edit your uploaded files and untick the checkbox.

Back when we updated our commenting system a short while back we added the functionality for mod authors to see what, if any, files the users who were commenting had downloaded from your file page. We've expanded this functionality now to include the user's download history of the required files too. You'll now be able to see if a user has downloaded the required files you list, as well as your files, which should help you to more quickly troubleshoot whether the user has actually downloaded the files necessary in order for your file to work.

Fingers crossed we should have another update today in regards to an update to NMM to fix the downloading issues. We've been testing it the past few days but there's still a couple of niggling bugs that need to be squashed before it's safe to release. Good news is, I go from a 25%-50% chance of a download working to 100%. Shock.

Uh, for some reason, i can't use that system. I tried and tried, but linking directly to a mod's url or number doesn't seem to work.

Either I'm doing something wrong or there is possibly something that was overlooked with this feature. Let's say you have different versions of your mod, and one version requires other files and another version does not. It looks to me like that checking the box to list your mods requirements causes that notification to pop up on EVERY file version you have. I've checked this on 2 different mods I have that require other resources, and I'm getting the same thing. Even though the files that I do NOT have the option to show the requirements checked, the notice still comes up, thereby misleading people into thinking that a version of my mod required additional resources that it in fact does not.

I've even tried to uncheck the notification on all of my files all together, and even though it it unchecked, the notice still keeps displaying. edit: ok, I just clicked on the Required Files link and removed the stored info there, and the notice does not display any longer.

Also, I never could get the link to an external site (NVSE) to save. Every time it would look like it saved, but it would not display in the notification.

I'm getting a LOT if server lag and images from the menus and background not displaying, so I'm hoping this is all just resulting from the persistent server problems that have been going on since 11-11-11.

I downloaded the new update for the Dev airship and I can understand the need to say what files are required for it to work but.... Is it really necessary for the rude message saying that if you dont have those requirements its your own fault if it doesnt work? I can understand the reason and purpose behind this but if a person cant read the requirements on the mods page then whats the purpose of that rude message? It really irks me for some reason.... Completely unnecessary......

Uhm...it's the message that pops up when a mod has a required file...so it's the Nexus itself that has that message. I agree with that it feels kind of rude.

Seems like a perfectly reasonable message to me, perhaps a little blunt, but I'd rather that than some some daft patronising sugar-coated "oh you poor dear you were too lazy to read instructions, poor you!" message.

I don't agree. You could just end the message after the 'it will not work' part.

As a mod author, how do I specify a requirement for all the DLCs of a game? I've got two mods that need all their game's DLCs, but I don't see how to add the requirement. Since you don't host the DLCs on nexusmods, I assume it would go under the External Link area. But, what do I give as a link? A Steam page? The game developer page?

                                                  Have you tried it, yet?
I just went to one of my mods, edited its requirements, and was presented an entire list of Official DLCs with checkboxes right on top, before the list of mods on Nexus and the list of off-site mods.

If there is no list with checkboxes in the requirements dialog for your game, then there is no way to add them to the requirements, other than as you said manually linking to any one site where they are hosted. You could ask for their inclusion to the list in the feedback forums, but better expect staff to take their time, currently concentrating rather on the more important issues to be taken care of first.

There are usually multiple official download locations for DLCs. As long as you don't link an illegal one there shouldn't be any problems. After all, people will realize it's a DLC, and if they know of a better place to obtain it, they'll use that one instead. There's no tracking for 'off-site' downloads in the new system anyways, so the exact source doesn't matter much.

Just double-checked for one of my mods for Fallout 3. Went to "Required Files" and all I've got are the two categories: "Files or mods available on this site" and "Files or mods not on this site." Nothing under the former for the FO3 DLCs. Assuming I'm not messing up, then since you're seeing a section for DLCs for your game, them maybe they'll be adding it to the older games later. That would be good. Thanks for the reply.

Would you please make the hot files section work properly again in the not too distant future? It would have been an act of politeness towards the modding community to tell them that current releases won't have a chance to hit the front page atm., so that we could have decided if we want to keep our mods on hold until the related issues are fixed.

                                                        Thank you!!

I know this is off-topic, but how does the "hot file" system work?

Is it just number of downloads, downloads with respect to endorsem*nts, or some other calculation?

Are older files included in the rankings or are only newer files included?

I'm just curious. Required files notification and comment download history update (36)

Not having to login for mod manager to load = excellent
Having to login just to add a mod from file that was already manually downloaded defeats the purpose. Been trying for 20 minutes to add a file I have already downloaded just for mod manager to tell me I have to be logged in to download files (& won't let me log-in).

Kudos on getting rid of the long load times though.

As someone who has downloaded and tracks lots of mods, I'm dismayed at the possibility of yet another click requirement added to my download process -- it adds up fast, particularly for manual downloaders like me.

For manual downloading, the process is click to go to a mod page, click the Files tab, click to choose a file, click to choose a server, click to confirm the notification, and click to close the download box. So it's going from 5 clicks to 6, around 15% more.

Here's an example that sprung to mind after I looked at my current number of tracked-file notifications (545):

For 5 notifications, it's not such a big deal, just 5 more clicks. For 50 notifications, though, it's 50 more clicks. And for my current notifications, it's potentially over 500 more clicks.

The number of clicks required increases further for mods with multiple files and for download failures.

It's a bit daunting to face another click every. single. mod. and every. single. download. for those mods that have requirements added.

Please allow users to opt out of this new feature. Thank you.

I've been trying to download an update for a file I've already been successfully using, and the new popup is annoying, especially when I see it over and over again as I try to get past a "file not found" error on different servers.

                                                                          • jeromycraig

Does it only happen on new files you download or also on returning to the file and downloading an update?
Because if it still pops up after you've downloaded it once, and thereby already confirmed that you have the required files, then that's just ridiculous. They should be able to do it like the endorsem*nt system, so that it has already registered that you've downloaded the file. Easy as that.
