Nadia was born in Onesti, in Bacau County, Romania. She is the daughter of George and Stephanie Comaneci. Together with her younger brother Adriana, they were raised in the Romanian Orthodox Church after their parents separated, and her father moved to Bucharest. Comaneci was debuted at the age of 6 when Coach Bela Karolyi discovered her. She won the Romanian National Junior Championship and the European Championship and American cup as a senior.
